Times Square Playwrights was formed in 2002 by writers and actors looking for a place to create theater. The emphasis is on new plays by the writers in the group. At each weekly meeting, the writers are invited to bring a piece no longer than 15 minutes long, which is then cast from the actors present. The piece is presented as a sit-down reading (although some blocking can be done, if appropriate), and then the writer is given feedback from the group. Typically 8 - 10 pieces are done, and depending on the time and energy of the participants, most playwrights get the opportunity to work each week.

Our group includes people at all levels of theatrical experience. Several of our playwrights and actors have Broadway credits. A greater number have experienced the joys of Off-Broadway, and the majority have participated in full productions, readings, and workshops in the realm known as Off-Off Broadway. Our members can be seen on television, in music videos, commercials, and industrial films as well as in regional and national touring shows. We also have a growing contingent of artists just starting out in their careers.

Times Square Playwrights is also meant to be a place where theater professionals can network and find employment and those to employ in several capacities for assorted projects. From our beginning, writers and actors have approached other members of the group to collaborate on different projects. Members of Times Square Playwrights work on a regular basis with various theatrical organizations and do frequent public readings at venues throughout the city.
